Most young children delight in being physically active, which makes childhood an ideal time to talk with them about the benefits of lifelong fitness and good nutrition. Helping children develop positive attitudes toward healthy lifestyles at an early age makes it more likely they will carry healthy-living habits with them into adulthood. Here are a few ways to help your family with healthy living.

1. Identify the types of physical activities your family enjoys. According to the new document 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, children and adults should engage in physical activities for 60 minutes each day. This is especially important for young children and adolescents, to ensure they continue to build strong bones and muscles. Daily activities can include light-intensity (or “baseline”) activities such as standing and lifting light-weight objects, and high-intensity (or “health-enhancing”) activities such as jumping rope and dancing. The goal of each activity should be to improve bone health, flexibility, body composition (the percentage of fat, bone, and muscle), and cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Work as a family to create a list of physical activities your family already enjoys doing together, such as hiking or gardening. Then brainstorm a list of new activities to try, such as bicycling or kicking a soccer ball in the park. As your family thinks of new activities, keep adding them to the list.

2. Decide when your family will participate in physical activities together. After you have identified the activities your family enjoys, choose one or two activities to participate in each day. One simple activity families can do together, for example, is to take a walk after dinner. Walking is an excellent way to help digest a meal and strengthen muscles, and it provides an opportunity to share about each other’s day. List the activities on your family calendar and mark off each day’s activities together so everyone can look forward to the next day’s activities.

3. Determine your family’s fitness goals and keep track of them. Consider setting fitness goals for your family. As with any type of exercise you begin, it is important to first consider the ages and current fitness levels of all participants. Then you can work toward increasing the intensity and duration of different activities. For example, during the first week, your family might take 30-minute walks each night after dinner, followed by dancing to your child’s favorite CD in the living room. The next week, increase the time spent walking and pick up the dancing pace a bit.

One way to track your family’s fitness goals is to write them down and put them on the refrigerator or in some other highly visible location. Review your goals periodically. After a goal has been met, set a new goal to work toward. Remember: The most important goal is for all family members to participate in physical activities regularly, so it’s important that any goals you set are attainable and that everyone is motivated to work toward them.

4. Talk about the importance of good nutrition and healthy eating habits. Children need adults to teach them about foods that are healthy for their bodies as well as to model eating healthy foods. Talking about good nutrition with children can be as simple as explaining the need to eat foods from different food groups to ensure their bodies receive the different vitamins and minerals needed to stay healthy. As a family, create menus that include foods that are healthy and that everyone enjoys. Then, involve your child in the food-shopping process, including making a list and locating different foods in the store. For children who are reading, teach them how to read labels on foods too.

Maintaining Your Plan

1. Do get active! Remember to participate in some type of physical activity or activities for a total of at least 60 minutes each day. It’s not about exercising for long periods of time; it’s just about moving !
2. Do have fun! Family members are much more likely to participate in physical activities that are fun, so make sure everyone enjoys the time spent together.
3. Do eat healthy! Eat fewer foods that are high in fat and calories, and more foods that benefit the body, such as fruits and vegetables. Involve the entire family in selecting and preparing meals so everyone understands how to make healthy food choices.

Toddlers’ moods can change as quickly — and with as little warning — as the weather. There are about a million reasons why your child might be pushing you away (or suddenly seem desperate for a snuggle). While the best advice is usually just to wait it out like a thunderstorm, here’s a list of some of the more common reasons your toddler might be acting standoffish and how to respond:

He’s had a bad day.
Just like grown-ups, kids have days when all they want to do is crawl under a rock and stay there. While the issues may be less complex than those adults face, disappointment and frustration can bring out the loner in a toddler. Maybe he didn’t get a turn on the swing at the park or he got reprimanded at daycare. Either way, he doesn’t want your hugs or cuddles to make him feel better.

How to respond: Respect his desire for distance but let him know that you’re there if he wants your help. He may just have to lick his wounds on his own and will seek you out after he’s done pouting.

He’s recovering from a tantrum.
If he pushes you away right after you’ve disciplined him with a time-out or by taking away something he wanted, it’s common sense: His feelings have been hurt and he wants you to know it. Or maybe he’s just tired — screaming and collapsing on the floor in misery can take a lot out of a person.

How to respond: First, accept that he’s entitled to feel disappointed. Think about how you feel after a fight with your spouse or best friend — you probably need some time before you’re ready to make up. Your toddler is no different.

Before you give your toddler space, show him that you understand his feelings: “You don’t want to talk to Mama because you’re mad that she didn’t let you run in the parking lot, right?” Let him know that you’ll be there for him when he feels like a hug. Assure him that no matter what, you still love him — even if he broke the rules.

Destinations

If someone would offer something like this destination weddings over at Karisma Hotel, I wouldn’t take no for an answer even if it’s not my wedding anymore! hehe Seriously, I just read the information and heard a lot of raves about this place already. Even the husband told me it’s a nice getaway. I really hope we can have a vacation alone together this year. It has been a while. He’s busy with work and I’m busy with real life stuff as well. We could try the all inclusive perks and enjoy a fab spa there or even try the gourmet inclusive because they will teach you how to be a good cook! Check it out! It’s very inviting!

Thoughts..

I’m not sure what to talk about right now.:) I have been spending more time off line and in the real world. I get to meet new faces and other Mom’s who goes to school everyday though. Which is a plus. And then the biz that I have to work hard. I think I just missed the husband so badly. He’s been traveling a lot and will be here next month. I’m just looking forward to seeing him again..This reminds me that I have to check on this home insurance for the 3 door apartment.

Anyway, I hope your days are wonderful!

Curious as a Cat

I’ve been thinking about what my bro told me about call center services. He’s working at one that’s why most of our talks is about there. And some of his pogi friends:) hehe Anyway, I haven’t been answering this meme for a while now and thought I’d try this week again!

1) What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?
+ Some exotic foods in Thailand and Cambodia. Weird and definitely not trying it again! :D

2) Where is your favorite place to shop for clothes?
+ Online and department stores. I tend to stop buying clothes for weeks now and it’s something for me;)

3) Describe your perfect day?
+ Ah…perfect day. At the beach. With my boys. Lazing around and not worrying about anything. I could go for a spa day as well. It would be perfect to just relax and recollect things..

4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

+ He’s one curious creature:)

Little Pea..

I am checking something about LSAT prep for a friend. And thought I’d share some exciting news about my youngest…he’s growing up so fast..And my eldest as well. Lilpea in the other hand has grown up fast and a total opposite of my eldest. He loves to eat, and has been the most talkative wee kiddo on the block! He befriends every lil boys his big bro has and even his uncle’s friends(my brother) too. Every time someone rang a bill in the gate, he would shout. He’s a happy kiddo and everyone loves him;) This is what babycenter says at 20 months and 2 weeks old.

He may not have the vocabulary to carry on a conversation just yet, but don’t be surprised if your toddler starts to mimic your telephone style with his own toy phone. You may also catch him imitating the way you act behind the wheel of the car, preparing meals, or cleaning the house. This copycat behavior can be charming or potentially embarrassing. Pay extra attention to your own language and behavior, so you don’t inadvertently teach him something you’d rather not see him do.

I am thinking of enrolling him in a playgroups..Let’s see what I can do;)

How are my lil boys?

They are alright and well! My eldest is doing fine with his schooling and gained more new friends. He likes being in school and he knows tons of Tagalog words now. The only problem is his Filipino subjects because he’s finding it hard but he is trying hard I know. But he’s excited everyday on going to school. I’d love to post photos but I just don’t have a lot more time. My youngest you asked? He is very well! Gained weight and I was advised by his pedia that he needs to slow down with his food intake because he’s overweight with his age. But he’s alright. I wish I can post pics soon..you will love him, surely! :) Now, I’m off to finding info about Avesil because I’ve heard it’s a good diet pill. I’m not going to use one but I’m so near to that decision. I really want to loose weight..sigh

Anyway, hope your days are wonderful!
